For Immediate Release:

Vickie Arndt Sculpture and Works on Paper at Jay Grimm, Chelsea

Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of Vickie Arndt's sculpture and drawings from September 18 through October 23, 1999. There will be an opening at the gallery on Saturday, September 18th, from 6-8 P.M., and the artist will be present.

The exhibition, Arndt's second at Jay Grimm Gallery, will consist of biomorphic wall sculptures made from found objects that the artist alters in her studio. Arndt sets up a tension between natural forms and synthetic materials in her work, which juggles fragility and danger. Also exhibited will be Arndt's works on paper, often consisting of multiple layers of vellum, wax, pigment and pencil. Used in preparation for the three-dimensional work, Arndt's drawings offer insight into her artistic practice, both in the rugged forms depicted and in the use of unorthodox materials.

In addition to the sculpture and works on paper, Arndt will exhibit three units of her ongoing Drawer Piece. The Drawer Piece is a large set of wooden drawers, made for the storage and catagorization of scientific specimens. Arndt has been filling the case with found objects for the past five years. She constantly refers to these items, choosing some to use in her sculpture. The evolving arrangements have taken on a life of their own and will be displayed as completed units of an ongoing project.

In reviewing Arndt's 1998 show at Jay Grimm, critic Lauri Firstenberg wrote,

The sculptural works comprised of debris are manipulated into biomorphic forms which signal the bodily and the scatalogical in a Benglisian way. Her work encourages a dialectic between the natural and the artificial via her materiological experiments.

Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11-7 P.M.
