For Immediate Release: Karel Appel Paintings from the 1990s at Jay Grimm, Chelsea
The show will consist of three large abstract oils loosely based on the forms of trees. Executed in 1991, this ruggedly painted series contains influences that have been central to Appel's work throughout his long career, including the Dutch landscape tradition and Northern Expressionists such as van Gogh. These paintings, in their vigorous, thick impasto and direct paint application demonstrate Appel's contribution to the medium. Despite the heavy brushwork, the curiously delicate tree-forms emerge, floating against a blank white space. The rawness of the imagery and anthropomorphic treatment of natural forms to evoke a dream-like mood define the evocative style that is his signature. Internationally known for his leadership in the CoBrA movement of the late 1940s, Appel has shown regularly in New York throughout his career. He now divides his time between Italy, France and New York. An exhibition of Appel's sculpture, Sculptures Without a Hero was held last year in the 590 Madison Avenue Atrium (at 57th Street). The show at Jay Grimm Gallery will complement that show by exhibiting paintings from the same period. Gallery
