For Immediate Release:

Vickie Arndt's small wall-mounted sculptures seem of this world yet are strangely foreign. Made of cast-away objects, such as plastic toys, worn-out gadgets and wire, as well as natural materials, such as pods, leaves and rocks, they resemble ritualistic objects or exotic life forms. Arndt often combines several of these found elements and subtly manipulates or embellishes them with wax, clay or objects she has made. The result is a delicate balance between the natural world and the manmade. It is difficult to distinguish an object Arndt has found and left untouched from others that are slightly altered or completely constructed from her imagination. While many of her pieces are visually delicate and literally fragile, some, with prickly or hornlike protrusions, have a slightly menacing quality. Wax-encased constructions of brightly colored clay are embryonic, and indeed, some of her works seem capable of self-procreation.

Arndt's drawings play a part in the creation of the sculpture. Drawn with pencil on glassine and diaphanous paper, the abstract images are layered on top of each other to achieve a veil-like quality, giving the drawings a sculptural, multidimensional presence. While some drawings are based on her own constructions, many are entirely from Arndt's imagination.

Arndt's work relates to the Surrealist tradition in its attention to biomorphic form and in its visual solutions. She makes her audience aware of the processes and fragility of being alive, as well as its beauty.
