Manuel Cancel Paintings at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea

Tree I, 2000, acrylic on canvas 15 x 18"

Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of paintings by Manuel Cancel from September 8 through September 29, 2001. There will be a reception at the gallery on Saturday, September 8th, from 6-8 P.M.

Cancel's new body of work consists of small-scale landscapes and still-lives that often incorporate text and human figures. Tightly rendered forms and bright, lucid colors give the works a magical, almost surreal sensibility. Cancel frames many of his images with blank canvas and thinly limned lines to draw attention to the support in an unexpected manner. The scenes, which seem to be based on specific places, are depicted in a dream-like fashion. Other-worldly and spooky, they attempt to portray the drama and solitude of the human response to nature. By inflecting these works with a sense of melancholy and yearning, Cancel makes them both memorable and familiar.
