For Immediate
Release:
Andoni
Euba Paintings at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea Jay Grimm Gallery at
505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of paintings by
Andoni Euba from April 26 through May 25, 2001.
There will be a reception at the gallery on Thursday, April 26th, from
6-8 P.M.
Andoni Euba's new paintings are landscape-driven abstract images that
rely on soft gradations of light and sudden shifts in color to create
a sense of drama. Executed on smooth panels without any visible brushwork
or impasto, the forms appear to be almost photographic cross-sections
or details of natural objects such as shells or feathers.
The title
of the exhibition, "Guadalupanas and Collectionables" refers to two of
Euba's major points of departure. 'Guadalupana' refers to the Virgin of
Guadalupe, a Mexican saint often depicted in folk art with an oval corona
of multicolored light. 'Collectionables' are Euba's word for the souvenirs
one gathers in nature-a shell from a walk on the beach, for example. The
ideas of memory, emanance and nature are key to these works.
Euba currently lives and works in his native city of Bilbao, Spain, having
recently spent several years in San Francisco. He is represented by Galeria
Colon XVI in Bilbao, Galeria Almirante in Madrid and by Catherine Clark
Gallery in San Francisco. Euba was in a three-person show at Jay Grimm
Gallery in the summer of 1999.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6 P.M. and by appointment.
