For Immediate Release: Joe Fyfe Paintings at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea
Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, will hold an exhibition of paintings by Joe Fyfe from June 14 through July 12, 2002. There will be a reception at the gallery on Thursday, June 13th from 6-8 PM. Joe Fyfe creates deceptively simple paintings. Using acrylic paint on primed burlap and jute, he limits his palette to a few colors in each work. Yet, while they are reductive, these works are hardly minimal. Fyfe's delicate mark-making and his sense of play place these works in the tradition of gestural abstraction.
Seen from a contemporary perspective, Fyfe's work has an unusual degree of restraint coupled with an underlying expressiveness. There is a tension between his elegant touch and the rough surfaces he has chosen to work upon. What at first appears ramshackle gives way to a sense of gentle beauty. Fyfe thus demonstrates that even rugged materials can, in the hands of an artist, be made graceful. Joe Fyfe's last solo show was at Nicholas Davies Gallery, New York in 1998. Since then, he has been awarded a 2002 Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant, and has received fellowships from the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, Yaddo and MacDowell colonies. Fyfe recently exhibited individual pieces at Pierogi 2000 and N3 Painting Space in Brooklyn. He was also in a group show at Thomas Korzelius Gallery with Merlin James and James Hyde in 1999. Fyfe curated the 1996 show, Try a Little Tenderness at Apex Art, New York.
