I am an independent arts professional with over 20 years experience in the field. I provide art advising services to private collectors, with an emphasis on making the experience of collecting art exciting. My expertise is in modern, contemporary art and American painting, but my thorough knowledge of the inner workings of the art market and the gallery system allow me to cross over and assist collectors with other categories of fine art as well. My business activities also include management consulting services to galleries, the purchase and sales of secondary market works of art, appraisals, as well as working with a small number of contemporary artists to develop their careers. A native New Yorker, I have worked at some of the most prestigious galleries in New York, including Pace Gallery, Washburn Gallery and Hirschl & Adler. In 1998, I established my own gallery in a storefront on 28th Street in Chelsea, completely renovating a disused space. At that time, I was a pioneer; for many years the space was the northernmost gallery in the neighborhood. The gallery exhibited emerging and mid-career artists, including shows of primary market work by Karel Appel, Lucas Samaras and Richard Smith, and represented then-emerging artists such as Joe Fyfe, and Nancy Lorenz. Exhibitions were regularly reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Art in America, The Village Voice and Art Forum. The gallery mounted eight shows per year and all aspects of running the gallery were done single-handedly. In 2002, the business was merged with James Graham & Sons, where I served as the gallery director for six years. I hold a BA in Art History from the George Washington University and an MA in Art History & Criticism from SUNY/Stony Brook. My professional affiliations include the Independent Curators International ‘Independents’ and I serve on the Catalog Raisonné committee for the Estate of Norman Bluhm, who was a New York School Abstract Expressionist. I have given several lectures on the art market to graduate students at the Fashion Institute of Technology and at The New School. Having worked in almost every gallery position, from art handler to director and as a sole proprietor, and having been in a range of galleries, uptown, downtown, blue-chip and cutting edge, I have a uniquely holistic view of the business. My professional life has exposed me to a great range of material, such as American painting and sculpture, contemporary art, Asian decorative art and British ceramics. I bring to my pursuits an enthusiasm and passion for a wide variety of art and such flexibility allows me to be of service in many ways. My clients involve me deeply in all aspects of their collecting: negotiations, installation, conservation, framing, lighting, shipping, insurance, appraisals and collections management. I hope to engage my clients in their investment of their time and resources into fine art in the knowledge that living with great work is a rich reward. I am open to many avenues of being involved in the acquisition and appreciation of wonderful art and welcome the opportunity to work with collectors new and old.
