For Immediate Release: Nancy Lorenz Paintings at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, will hold an exhibition of paintings by Nancy Lorenz from March 28 through April 27, 2002. There will be a reception at the gallery on Wednesday, March 27th from 6-8 PM. Nancy Lorenz uses mother-of-pearl,
pigment and, often, layers of shellac in her work, creating a highly refined
surface. Gradually shifting in tone and color, her abstractions relate
to the asian landscape painting tradition in their ability to evoke endless
space. Lorenz lived in Japan for five years and later worked as a restorer
of lacquer antiques. These paintings combine the artist¹s interest
in asian craftsmanship and materials, while also allowing a more gestural
and incidental approach associated with abstract oil painting. Lorenz work engages the current dialogue in contemporary art by juxtaposing a sense of geometry with natural materials. The tension she creates between traditional compositional concerns and the patterns that occur in nature drives her work. Lorenz balances these ideas to create opulent works of striking beauty. Nancy Lorenz held a solo show in December, 2001 at PDX Gallery in Portland, Oregon. She was recently included in "Le Temps Fractal" at Galarie Xippas in Paris, France. She has executed large-scale commissions for Peter Marino, Thomas O¹Brien, Chahan Minassian and William Sofield. Lorenz is in the collection of Nathan Lane, Vice-President and Mrs. Cheney¹s official Washington D.C. residence, and the New York Public Library among others. Nancy Lorenz received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1998. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6 P.M. and by appointment.
