"Selections:
Six Artists from Pakistan" at Jay Grimm Gallery, Chelsea
Jay Grimm Gallery
at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of six Pakistani
artists, curated by Atteqa Ali, from December 13th, 2000 through January
13th, 2001. There will be a reception at the gallery on Wednesday, December
13th, from 6-8 P.M., and the curator and some of the artists will be present.
In Pakistan, the legacies of ancient civilizations, Mughal rule, Hindu
influences, and British dominance have produced a diverse, often contradictory
culture. It's a place where vestiges of vanished societies (Mohenjodaro)
exist side-by-side with the temples of global commerce (McDonald's). In
their work, the six artists in "Selections" comment on contemporary life
in Pakistan--their approaches as varied as the culture.
"Selections" highlights some of the artistic developments that have emerged
in Pakistan over the last ten years. The six artists, Mahbano Abidi, Alia
Hasan-Khan, Huma Mulji, Asma Mundrawala, Saira Wasim, and Novin Zahid,
work in a variety of media, including photography, sculpture and painting.
All received part of their education in Pakistan and two have come to
the United States for further training. Making references to local traditions--from
the refined elegance of miniature painting to the excessive decoration
of so-called truck art--these artists also draw on art-making practices
prevalent in the international arena. In doing so, they offer a unique
perspective, adding to and challenging established ideas of contemporary
art.
Atteqa Ali was formerly in the Department of Cultural Programming at the
Asia Society in New York City. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in
Art History at the University of Texas, Austin.
