Untitled, 2002

Jay Grimm Gallery at 505 West 28th Street, New York, will hold an exhibition of paintings by Julia von Eichel from May 2nd through June 8th, 2002. There will be a reception at the gallery on Thursday, May 2nd, from 6-8 P.M.

Julia von Eichel uses oil paint on mat board, painstakingly incising monochromatic surfaces with patterns made of small, crescent-like units that cover large areas of the paintings. These incisions, sometimes barely noticeable at first glance, create movement and subtle shifts of light and shadow. Von Eichel balances the intimacy of these minute shapes with the sweeping forms they delineate as a group.

The new work marks a refinement of von Eichel's ability to control the shadows created by her incisions. She guides the viewer's eye through pictorial space with sweeping gestures and quirky forms that evoke nature. Her work, to some extent, advances the Minimalist attempt to distill a maximum of movement from monochromatic surfaces. Von Eichel alters color by refracting the light that dances off her paintings, not by adding or subtracting pigment.

Von Eichel received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1996. This is her second solo show at Jay Grimm Gallery. She has been included in group shows in New York at James Graham & Sons, Nicholas Davies Gallery and at 3 Crosby Street, as well as at Jay Grimm Gallery. She recently held a solo show at Addison/Ripley Gallery, Washington, D.C. and was in a group show last month at Whitney Baldwin Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6 P.M. and by appointment. Please call the Gallery at 212.564.7662 for images or additional information, or visit our website at www.jaygrimm.com.
